Our story
We learned the felt from the dealer's side.
Our founder, Mara Vidler, spent eleven years managing card rooms across Sydney's western suburbs. She counted chips at closing, rotated worn cards out of the shoe, and watched felt wear thin under regulars' elbows.
In 2015 she started sourcing better gear for other clubs, on the side. The Green Baize Co. grew out of that list of favours. Sydney's home tournament scene still runs mostly on folding tables and borrowed chip trays — we wanted proper kit at a fair price, close enough to inspect before it ships.
A cut card near the bottom of the shoe stops a sharp eye reading the last few hands. Small things like that separate a serious room from a lounge room.
The workshop on Danks Street.
Our workshop sits behind the Danks Street showroom, on the same block as our warehouse. Two benches, one long cutting table, and a rack of felt rolls sorted by weight.
We cut speed cloth and wool-blend baize to order, to the millimetre, for tables we build and for tables other makers built years ago. A 9ft speed cloth layout takes around forty minutes to lay and trim. Wool-blend felt takes longer — it drapes differently and needs pinning before the final cut.
Table legs are bolted, not glued, so folding models can be serviced without stripping the felt underneath.
Before it reaches the floor
What we check before we stock anything.
We don't stock a product because a catalogue photo looks sharp. Every set and table passes the same short checklist first.
- Chip edge-spot patterns, checked stack by stack for consistent alignment.
- Inlay registration on every denomination, not just the sample piece.
- Card stock weight, 300gsm to 330gsm for paper decks, confirmed against the mill docket.
- Cellulose acetate lamination, tested for glare under our showroom spotlights.
- Table leg fittings, torqued and re-torqued after the first fold-test.
- Felt tension across the rail, checked by hand before a table leaves the workshop.
